Education is an integral part of the work of Chester Cathedral. The Education Deparment at Chester Cathedral is one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, recognising it as a provider of quality, safely managed educational experiences for young people.
The Quality Badge is a brand new scheme, combining for the first time learning and safety into one easily recognisable badge for all organisations providing learning outside experiences. The Education Department was also awarded the Sandford Award for excellence in heritage education in July 2009.
The Education Department consists of an education officer, supported by a team of volunteers. Chester Cathedral welcomes over 7,000 children and young people a year for interactive tours and educational activities. These children come predominately from local schools but also from further afield and include youth groups, uniformed organisations such as guides and scouts, confirmation classes, Sunday schools and foreign language schools.
We offer a variety of tours which can cover areas of the National Curriculum and locally agreed RE syllabi. A variety of craft workshops are also on offer. These can be tailor made to fit your needs and can be adapted for different ages and abilities. Please contact us to hear more about what we can offer.
The annual Pilgrim Days see around 900 children in the Cathedral for a variety of activities over a week.
The Education Team also does outreach work, such as running an activity stall at the Cheshire Show and are happy to visit schools and other organisations to talk about the Cathedral.
Regular drop in family activity sessions are held during half term and school holidays.
