The Society of Friends of Chester Cathedral was founded by Dean Frank Selwyn Bennett in 1930. Membership is thriving with over 800 members.
The Friends of Chester Cathedral aim to support and work with the Dean and Chapter in maintaining, preserving, improving and enhancing the fabric, fittings, ornaments, furniture, music and monuments of the cathedral, and to support its life, worship and ministry.
The society has supported a wide variety of developments across the entire cathedral and particularly the areas of worship and music. They have also provided funds for the maintenance of the fabric and the furniture of the building.
The Friends meet the cost of providing flower arrangements in the church as well as help the Gardening Group who maintain the grounds around the cathedral. The popular weekly lunchtime Organ Recitals are financially supported by the Friends and the girls’ choir will soon be resplendent in new surplices provided by the society.
A number of social events are held by the Friends during the year as well as a very popular overnight trip. The Annual General Meeting is held every June and all members are invited to attend.
