Our volunteers generously give their time to welcome our visitors and help to meet the spiritual and financial aims of the cathedral. We are always looking for energetic and dynamic volunteers to help support our staff across all areas.
The list below indicates the areas in which we are currently seeking volunteers:
Verging team volunteers – Our vergers are a busy team who are responsible for verging during services and preparing spaces for services and special events. Cathedral vergers also play an active role in maintaining the traditions of our magnificent church and monastic complex.
Tour guide volunteers – Guides lead visitors on a historical journey through time, uncovering its secrets, its stories of the past and its hidden gems through the daily tours offered to visitors.
Welcoming – Must be fit enough to stand and greet visitors. We especially welcome volunteers with foreign language skills;
Tower Tour – Must be fit enough to climb 216 steps;
Education – May require a DBS check;
Cathedral in LEGO® – Help build a miniature cathedral while interacting with our many visitors.
All volunteers must be able to commit to regular shifts and when on duty are considered full representatives of the cathedral and, therefore, complicit with all cathedral policies.
New members of the team receive training, and are invited to training events throughout the year. All our volunteer guides must have good interpersonal skills, communication skills, and a desire to learn. In some cases, volunteers are asked to undergo a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check before commencing duties.
