In January 2013 Chester Cathedral launched a five year strategic plan to help focus our mission and ministry and give specific attention to key areas of work that require our concentrated energies. As part of this process we have developed a purpose statement reflecting our aspiration as a community to be committed to growth and transformation at three levels and across six areas of our community life.

Inspired by Christ, Chester Cathedral seeks to encourage personal, city and regional growth through:

  • Worship and prayer;
  • Learning and discipleship;
  • Serving our city, region and diocese;
  • Conserving and developing our buildings and heritage;
  • Welcome and hospitality;

A sustainable and ethical business operation.

Chester Cathedral receives almost no funding from the Church of England, diocese or government. As a free to enter cathedral, it relies entirely on donations to stay open to the public. Playing host to a multitude of projects, there are many routes to choose from when making a donation. The information on this page will help you decide how you would like to support Chester Cathedral with your donation. If you would like further information, please contact our office.

With operational costs of over £2 million a year, Chester Cathedral relies entirely on the generous donations our visitors and congregation provide. Donations are used to keep the building open to the public by paying for heating, water, electricity and lighting. Among many other things, general donations also provide:

  • Our worship spaces with candles for chapel candle banks;
  • Our education department with an education officer and supplies for school visits;
  • Our music department with a Grand Organ that is maintained and tuned monthly;
  • Our falconry with supplies to create engaging educational activities for children;
  • Our gardeners with tools and equipment to maintain the estate.

All general donations help to fulfil the implementation of the cathedral’s five-year strategic plan, outlined in our purpose statement.

Some frequent visitors to the cathedral, and many members of the congregation, choose to give regularly to Chester Cathedral via direct debit. If you would like to give regularly, please contact our finance department.

Projects such as Chester Cathedral in LEGO help to raise money for the Chester Cathedral Education Trust Fund. The aim is to raise enough money to ensure the future employment of an education officer who would further the goals of the cathedral purpose statement.

In 2014, Chester Cathedral launched a Grand Organ Appeal to raise the funds to rebuild the cathedral’s much-loved organ.  The organ has been part of the music making at the cathedral for hundreds of years and is an integral part of worship and of the building. Donating to the appeal provides funds for the maintenance and rebuilding of the Grand Organ.

The Cathedral Choir and the Nave Choir (the longest-serving voluntary cathedral choir in the country) rehearse weekly in the purpose-built Song School. In addition to the daily worship of the cathedral, the choir performs at least three concerts a year, records CDs, regularly appears on radio and television and undertakes tours to other countries. Through the Music Trust, the cathedral provides bursaries for the choristers and this level of support, together with the commitment of the choir members, is absolutely vital to ensure consistently high musical standards.

The Development Trust was established to ensure the maintenance of the fabric of the building remains possible. Donations to this trust are kept separate from general donations and instead are used for projects integral to the fundamentals and fabric of the building. If you would like to donate to a specific project involving the fabric of the building, please contact our finance department.
