Caporetto

September 2

A powerful installation of nine bells by the artist Keith Roberts.

The work evokes the silence and memory of stilled voices.

Bells sculpted in this way form an important thread in Keith Roberts’ practice. The sound of bells punctuates our lives. They ring out in times of celebration or crisis or simply to toll the hours. Roberts links the sound of bells to individual voices and lives, that in this instance have fallen silent and become memory.

Made of plaster and without tongues the bells could never sound out, but retain the potential and urgency to do so within their form. They have become fragile and mute: a voice silenced. In this sculpture they are laid out upon their sides and arranged in a rough line. Here they appear inactive and broken but also stored and ordered. They are remembered.

The title refers to a battle fought on the Italian front during the Autumn of 1917.

It was first shown as part of an exhibition at The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art called War in the Sunshine, 2017.
