Following an online meeting of the Mission Group, we have reluctantly taken the decision to cease our support for Malawi from the end of this year. This is because, due to a change of clergy there and staff changes here, we are no longer getting regular updates on the link. We had an email from them in May to thank us for the money we sent last December and explaining that they were diverting part of that from the building work it was intended for to feeding the people who are starving as a result of their Covid-19 lockdown. Obviously we do not wish to abandon them in the present circumstances, so all the money we raise this year will still be split with them.
Following staff changes in the Cathedral, we have also lost our Christian Aid rep, Valerie Hamill, who had made an excellent start to her work with the Mission Group. We would like to thank her for the energy and enthusiasm she brought to the group and for her ideas for our wider work. Fortunately we have received an offer to replace her from Mary Sawyer, who has a lot of experience, especially with refugees. We will welcome Mary to the Mission Group at our next meeting in September but she is already in touch with the Chester Christian Aid committee as the Cathedral link.
We are in discussion with the Cathedral about how we can safely resume our fundraising programme and we will let everyone know when we are able to hold our next event. In the meantime, please do continue to think of others in the wider community who are in need.
