Kondopoga parish team is still actively running its community programme, which we in the Cathedral support through the Mission Group. The parish wasn’t able to run its usual summer activities for children. However, a fantastic response from local volunteers and funding from St Gregory’s (including money from us) meant that they were able to support 20 families including 49 children. Each week they distributed food parcels with cleaning products and loo-roll added each month. Every child received stationery for their school work, and, where needed, clothes donated locally and new shoes. Three trainee teachers, a fully-trained teacher and a speech therapist volunteered to help tutor children in core subjects, helping them catch up after time out of school.
Most of the children are referred to Father Lev and the team by Social Services, who work closely with the church. However, they do not provide any funds to enable the work to take place, so our help (through St Gregory’s Foundation) is vital. From 1 November we will be selling St Gregory’s Foundation Christmas cards on Sunday mornings in the Refectory after the service, together with home made jams, marmalades and chutneys made by Mission Group supporters. The money for the cards goes direct to St Gregory’s but the money for the preserves is split four ways between Kondopoga, the church in North India, Malawi and the Education Department. Please help out if you can by shopping at our table, distanced from other people of course!
