Sustainability at Chester Cathedral: Nurturing a Greener Future

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

At Chester Cathedral, our commitment to sustainability isn't just a pledge—here's a glimpse into the strides we've already taken and the path we're paving ahead:

Harnessing Solar Energy

The sun shines bright on our sustainability efforts. With the installation of 206 solar panels, we're generating a significant portion of our energy consumption sustainably. Proactive steps like transitioning to a 100% renewable energy scheme well ahead of schedule, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to Net Zero Carbon promises.

Café 1092

In Café 1092 we locally source as much of our food as possible with cakes from a local bakery in Flint, bread from Willis the Baker in Saltney, fruit and veg from Francis Thomas on Northgate Street, milk from Morton's dairy, and Illy coffee. We proudly take part in the Chester Zoo palm oil city scheme and only use sustainable palm oil.

Illuminate with Efficiency

Energy-efficient LED fixtures and fittings are set to illuminate our cathedral, further reducing our environmental footprint. Plans for additional solar panel installations are also on the horizon, solidifying our stance on renewable energy.

Eco Church Champion

Registered as an Eco Church and holding a Bronze level status, we're actively working towards achieving Silver.

Zero to Landfill Recycling

At Chester Cathedral, waste isn't the end of the story—it's a new beginning. With our zero to landfill recycling initiative, every bottle, paper, and can finds purpose anew. We're not just reducing waste; we're reshaping our future, one recycled item at a time.

Net Zero Carbon Action Plan

We're not just talking the talk; we're walking the walk. Our Net Zero Carbon Action Plan is underway, setting clear objectives to mitigate our carbon footprint.

Chester Cathedral has a Eco Sustainability team overseeing the approach to carbon net zero by 2030. They meet regularly and gather projects to meet sustainability targets in the Cathedral.

At Chester Cathedral, sustainability isn't just a goal—it's our mission. Join us on this journey towards a greener, brighter future for generations to come.
