Volunteer at Chester Cathedral

We are always on the lookout for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to help support our visitors and staff. Here are some of the teams looking for volunteers.

Tour guides

Our tour guides lead visitors on historical and architectural journeys by telling the stories of our past and present.

Vergers

Join a busy team that is responsible for preparing spaces for services, events, and exhibitions, as well as being present in the building to help visitors.

Education

Join our Education team and help with: Sunday School, worshops, half-term activities, and more. Flexible hours available throughout the year including Pilgrim Week and Nativity on the Move.

Tech assistant

We are always in need of tech savvy volunteers to help us stream our online services. All ages welcome.

Be a part of history. Join the oldest voluntary choir in the country! To audition email Alex.lanigan-palotai@chestercathedral.com

Cathedral estate and gardens

Our magnificent building has equally stunning gardens and grounds thanks to our estate teams who maintain them year-round.

Bell ringing team

Help this small and dedicated team not only to call people to worship, but to take part in regular practice in the Addleshaw Bell Tower.

All volunteers must be able to commit to regular shifts and when on duty are considered full representatives of the cathedral and part of our team. You will receive full training and must have good interpersonal and communication skills with a desire to learn.

To apply for any of the roles, please email our Volunteer Coordinator.

It costs £6,000 a day to care for our historic building and to maintain our worship and music tradition. We rely on the kindness and generosity of people like you to power our work.
