Chester Artist Celebrated During Cathedral Sessions Funded by Housebuilder

An influential Chester artist will be at the centre of family activities at Chester Cathedral this summer.

Chester Cathedral is hosting free family activities to keep the kids entertained over the school holidays, including 10 two-hour sessions that have been funded by homebuilder Redrow. They are themed around the iconic stained-glass designs of Trena Cox.

The city centre venue applied to Redrow’s Chester community fund, linked to Kings Moat Garden Village on Wrexham Road.

Clare Clague, Fundraising Manager at Chester Cathedral, said: “In October 2024 Chester Cathedral will host an innovative exhibition featuring influential twentieth century Chester artist, Trena Cox whose stained-glass windows feature in at least 68 churches and cathedrals, including Chester Cathedral.”

The activities will be on between the July 30 and August 28, 2024.

Clare continued: “Trena’s work is characterised by medieval and natural subjects, with distinctive faces combined with vibrant colours and patterns. Landscapes feature heavily populated with a range of birds, trees, butterflies, fish, and hundreds of other creatures. We have tied in these characteristics with the activities and will be offering wildlife crafts, creating stained glass window acetates and badges.”

Amanda Hollins, area sales manager at Redrow, said: “These sessions will not only give families something to do during the summer holidays, but also the chance to experience the incredible Cathedral. It’s a building that is at the heart of Chester’s heritage. It’s also lovely that Trena Cox’ legacy is being showcased as she has played a key role in the cathedral’s design.”
